A porpoise driven life

As a pod of dolphins swam in our direction, I paddled into their path, then stuck my GoPro under the water and hoped for the best.

I got a little excited as I watched one dolphin in particular make a B-line for my board. It was so close, for a second I thought I might actually reach out to touch it.

I even found myself bending over, getting ready to reach out with my free hand and —

It splashed me.

I was a little disoriented at first. A little unsure what I had experienced. But later, when I watched the video, I saw proof: At the last second, the dolphin dove deeper, then splashed me with its tail.

It was probably some sign of aggression or a warning to stay back. But whatever — how awesome, right?

Getting good dolphin shots is hard. For one thing, you don’t seem them that often, and when you do, it’s not like they give you their course ahead of time. And even if you see some, you have to guess where they will pop up next.

Still, I’ve had a few decent shots of dolphins, both from the water and from land.  Here are a few:
