Hey now, you’re an all-star

My first attempts at water photography were pretty weak. Basically, they entailed walking into the surf as far as you could without ruining your camera or buying a crappy water-proof disposable.

At the same time, I really wanted some surf pics that I could fondly look back on when I’m old and stooped over.

So imagine my glee when I got my first GoPro.

I had a GoPro long before most surfers — leading to many questions out in the lineup — and I continue to use GoPros well after “too cool for school” surfers have deemed them for kooks only.

What can I say — it’s just fun. A great way to re-live your stoke. And, every now and then, a really nice photo results.

This one at the top is sort of an artsy take, with the camera half in and half out of the water. The rest of these are examples of the proverbial surf porn.

The idea behind GoPro is that all surfers can have photos taken of them just like the pros. But, as I’ve found, there are plenty of pics where my friends and I look far from all star worthy. Still — every now and then you capture the right moment — all you need is a second — and it’s poster worthy material.

I have many, many surfing selfies today. But the real fun is getting a good shot of one of your buddies.

Which is not easy. For all the decent ones I’ve taken, there are many more really bad ones.
